LABORATORIES

Chem Lab

The Chem Lab is equipped with instruments capable of chemically characterizing a plastic or composite material and studying its thermal and viscoelastic behavior. This is done through rheological, dynamomechanical, thermal, chromatographic analyses, density tests, and contact angle determination. These technologies enable the quality control of raw materials, analysis of polymeric and composite materials, especially recycled materials from both fossil and biomass sources, identifying the causes of non-conformities, and optimizing production processes. Additionally, complete characterizations can be performed on materials of other natures, such as mineral fillers or elastomer materials.

Horizon Lab

The Horizon Lab is dedicated to the activity of pure or applied research for the development of innovative composite materials, starting from the study and characterization of raw materials from fossil sources (virgin or recycled) or biomass. The research activity also involves the functionalization of polymer matrices and/or organic reinforcements to enhance compatibility and the synthesis of additives capable of improving the final properties of the composite. The available instruments allow for laboratory-scale work with the possibility of supporting scale-up of the process.

Image Lab

The Image Labs feature non-destructive instruments such as the optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the optical microscope interfaced with infrared spectroscopy. These instruments allow for both morphological and chemical characterization of the composite, identifying any defects, inhomogeneities, or presence of contaminants both on the surface and in cross-section, and enable the evaluation of the physical and qualitative characteristics of both composite materials and raw materials.

Dyno Lab

Volatiles Lab

In the Volatiles Lab, qualitative-quantitative analyses of the volatile fraction generated during the process are conducted, which can impact the material’s characteristics during use. Additionally, through thermogravimetric analysis, the thermal behavior of the composite material is studied, verifying its composition in terms of the weight percentage of its components. Finally, the laboratory is also focused on the chemical characterization and quantitative analysis of small organic molecules present, used as additives.
